Custom 2019 Jamco 3H LQ - Extra Tall, Well Equipped and Barely Used!

As we mentioned in the teaser, this 2019 Jamco 3H custom LQ just came in for us to display as a private sale. This is the owner’s 4th Jamco, so that’s a pretty good indication of her satisfaction with the brand. She’s selling this one due to lack of time for the multi-day trips she had in mind, but she’ll still have her trusty Jamco bumper pull to use when the schedule permits.  
 
In the listing title, we say this trailer has been barely used. How little? Less than 10 times, and only camped in once. The air conditioner, refrig, microwave and shower have been used a few times and the furnace, cooktop, toilet and TV not at all. The LQ interior looks as new. Overall, this trailer is about as close to new as a used trailer can be. 
 

      

We’ll cover the extensive features shortly, but first, a few words about Jamco construction. Unlike most brands that have a thin skin over a skeleton of small tubes, Jamco trailers have walls of interlocking aluminum tubes. If you’re familiar with older Jamcos, you may recall that the wall tubes were stacked, similar to how they stack the logs in a log house. Several years ago, Jamco tried a wall design that kept the interlocking tubes, but shifted them to vertical. The old horizontal-tube Jamcos were some of the strongest trailers on the market, but Jamco found that the vertical-tube wall design was even stronger. It’s been standard ever since. If left exposed, the vertical tubes might look a bit like a picket fence, so Jamco covers them with a smooth white aluminum skin, bonded by an aircraft grade adhesive.  This double wall design is strong for safety and durabilty, but it also provides a quiet and comfortable interior for your horses. 
 
The roof structure is double as well, in that it has a single piece aluminum outer skin and a ceiling of interlocking aluminum planks. It’s quieter and cooler than a single-layer roof (and we think it looks better too!). The floor consists of extruded aluminum planks arranged transversely. They have integrated I-Beam cross-members every 4.5 inches. That’s two cross-members within the typical hoof span. That’s a strong floor! We take the risk of boring you with construction details to give you an idea why many equestrians consider Jamco to be the finest aluminum trailer on the market.
 

  

Now back to the features…. Body width is 7.5 feet and body height is 8.5 feet. That taller-than-typical height makes for a very inviting horse area. The extra height offers benefits in the LQ as well by way of taller cabinets with more capacity (most with shelf space above), outstanding headroom in the sleeping area and a general feeling of openness and space. The thoughtfully designed LQ is 6.5 feet on the short wall and 10.5 feet on the long wall. At a floor length of 20.5 feet, this Jamco offers a great combination of easy maneuverability and comfortable accommodations for occupants, both human and equine.
 
Earlier, we touched briefly on some of the LQ amenities while talking about how little this trailer has been used. We’ll use the next few paragraphs to provide more detail.  
 

   

You could say this one has two large outdoor living rooms to complement the interior space, as it has power awnings on both sides - a 14-footer on the curb side and an 18-footer on the road side. That works out to nearly 300 square feet of covered outdoor living space. 
 

      

  

The LQ conversion was done by the highly-respected Bunk House Conversion, Inc. of Alabama. We’ve included a floor plan of the LQ in this listing, but we’ll talk you through to fill in some details. Step into the LQ and across the way is the kitchen, equipped with microwave, 2-burner recessed propane cooktop with range hood, sink and plenty of counter space and cabinets. And let’s not forget the large window that expands the space visually and offers a great view of the surroundings. There’s also a 3 cubic foot refrigerator that can run on electricity when available or propane when you’re off the grid. The 6-gallon water heater is powered by propane, as you’d expect in a quality conversion. To the left in the rear corner is a tall multi-compartment linen closet.
 

   

In keeping with the upscale nature of this trailer, this one has optional raised panel cabinets, interior doors and trim of solid Alder wood. There’s even a removable ladder, also of Alder, for easy access to the sleeping area. The floor is insulated. (Don’t take an insulated floor for granted!) The soft-touch walls and ceiling feature a Naugahyde upgrade. The light finishes and large windows make for an airy and inviting space. (And if you want to tone down or keep out the daylight, the windows are equipped with day/night shades.) For the comfort of occupants, there’s a thermostatically-controlled 13,500 BTU air conditioner with heat strip, ducted propane furnace and roof vents with integrated fans at the front and rear of the LQ.
 

   
  

To the right of the entry is a padded bench seat, its base concealing a 40 gallon fresh water tank. There’s a folding table that may be set up for dining inside the trailer or out. The table is self-supporting (no floor sockets to stumble over!) and stores in a cubby in the base of the linen closet. Moving forward past the sitting area, you may take the ladder or stepped cabinets to reach the sleeping area that has nearly 4.5’ of head room. There’s a plush mattress, a shirt locker, wide shelves with Alder railings, abundant overhead lighting and more. The sleeping area is ready to use with owner-added accessories such as pillows, sheets and blanket. If you’re in the mood for TV or music, the flat screen LCD TV swings out on an adjustable arm. By our tape, the TV looks to be about 23” diagonal and has an antenna with booster. The sound system includes AM/FM with CD player.
 

        

At the rear of the LQ, there’s a custom shower/toilet enclosure with translucent roof vent with exhaust fan.
 

   

We’ve covered the things you can see, but you’ll probably want to know something of the systems components you typically can’t see. There’s a 55 Amp power converter with shore power cord. Up on the roof, there’s a 158 Watt solar panel with controller to help keep a charge on the dual batteries.  Down below, there are black and gray water holding tanks, but here again, this trailer has something extra. The tanks are plumbed to a common outlet, which you’ll find on some trailers, but it also has auto dump valves. We tend to think of them more as remote-controlled rather than auto dump, but the main point is that you don’t have to reach under the trailer to open valves. You just swing down a small cover panel inside the LQ and flip a switch for whichever tank you want to empty. There’s a custom Aluminum Tread Plate (ATP) enclosure under the gooseneck that houses the batteries, dual 20 LB. propane tanks, individually-controlled dual electric/hydraulic landing gear and external drainback water faucet. This Jamco has a pair of 7000 lb. Dexter EZ-Flex axles with Goodyear Load Range E Radials on 16” aluminum alloy wheels.

      

With the talk of mechanical systems out of the way, let’s move from the LQ to the horse area. And you can literally make that move via the pass door from the LQ to the horse area. There’s also an escape door on the front stall, so you can use that front stall as a mud room or tack storage area (to supplement the rear tack area; more on that shortly). The escape door is split like a stall door so that when the trailer is parked, if there’s a horse in that first stall, you could leave the upper door open while keeping the lower door closed. The 2nd and 3rd stalls have Jamco-built drop down feed doors with windows. We say “Jamco-built” because they’re made of the same interlocking tubes as the walls.  They’re STRONG. If you’ve ever handled those modular drop-downs that install as a single assembly, you’ve probably noticed that you can grab the corners and they flex all over the place. That doesn’t happen with a Jamco drop down. 
 
Now that we’re talking about the horse area, we’ll remind you that this trailer is 8.5 feet tall. That’s great headroom for the horses and makes for an inviting space as they load. Stall offsets are approximately 40 inches. There’s a foal/stud divider on the first stall so that it may be used as a stall or as a tack storage area. This model comes with a 2-way vent over each stall, but this trailer was ordered with 2 vents over each stall. There’s also a large vent with integrated fan for additional light and ventilation. Another thoughtful touch the owner specified is a flush-mounted 110V receptacle high on the front wall.
 

         

Getting back to loading for a second, there’s a 4.5’ tall rear ramp with curtain doors (with windows) above. The ramp has the original equipment spring assist, but the owner had a couple of gas springs added as well. With the gas springs, we won’t say it’s a single-handed lift, but some of us can get it started with one hand. That’s pretty amazing, considering that the ramp features the same interlocking tube construction as the walls. It’s stout. All doors and the ramp have integrated locks. 
 
There’s a collapsible rear tack with swing-out saddle racks and thanks to the trailer’s 7.5’ body width, there’s a good-sized opening for the horses. In the front stall, the owner has had additional rings and fold-flat blanket bars added to facilitate using the front stall for additional tack storage, but because the hardware is smooth or low-profile, the front stall may still be used as a stall. Additional rings were added in the other stalls to accommodate feeders, etc.
 
The trailer arrived recently and we haven’t had time to pose it for a full set of pictures, so we’re using several pictures provided by the trailer owner, some pictures we took when the trailer was brand new and some LQ interior pictures that we took recently. We point this out because the initial pictures don’t show the added hardware in the stalls or the gas spring supplemental assist on the ramp. We’re going to take additional pictures shortly.
