The Comfort is one of Böckmann’s most affordable models. It’s for 2 horses to 17 hands. The big news is that the Comfort was updated in 2023. Thanks to the changes and affordable price, the updated Comfort has quickly become one of our most popular models.

Since we’re often asked, “What’s the difference between the Comfort and Champion R?” we’ll address that now. The Comfort is approximately the same size and shape as the Champion R (see Champion section), but the Comfort has walls of reinforced fiberglass instead of the Champion’s anodized aluminum walls.

For 2023, the Comfort received taller groom and tack compartment doors. As you may have noticed, the door tops sweep up with the trailer’s curves. By our tape, the updated Comfort’s groom door is about 5’ tall at its centerline, several inches taller than before for more convenient ingress and egress.

On the Comfort as on the Champion R, the tack compartment is asymmetric so there’s more space in front of the right stall where you enter through the groom door opening. With the 2023 update, in addition to the taller doors, the Comfort got several additional inches of working space in front of the left stall. Thanks to the taller doors and greater working space forward, the updated Comfort has quickly become one of our best sellers.

The Comfort comes with an English tack compartment as standard. A Western tack compartment is available as an option. The Western compartment has wider saddle racks and a slightly larger footprint than the English tack compartment. The Comfort’s fiberglass walls and roof may be ordered in a variety of colors and you may specify roof and walls in matching or contrasting colors.

As with the other Böckmann models, the Comfort is designed to be pulled safely by many of today’s more fuel-efficient smaller SUVs and trucks. In countries where fuel is expensive, some folks pull their Böckmanns safely with cars! When loaded with two horses, the Comfort is designed so that the loaded tongue weight will not exceed 211 lbs. For comparison, most domestic 2-horse trailers have a loaded tongue weight of 600 lbs. or more.

The Böckmann’s lighter tongue weight helps a smaller vehicle remain more level for predictable handling. The low-drag shape reduces the power requirement compared to a less aerodynamic trailer, another reason a Böckmann can be pulled safely by smaller-than-typical vehicles. More information on Böckmann’s easily-met tow vehicle minimum requirements can be found on our Böckmann main page.

Body height on every Böckmann we stock is over 7’6”, so they’re sized for large horses. Body length on the Comfort is about 10.5 feet. By our tape, usable width for each stall is over 30 inches. (Please note that we use the term “usable width” because the stall widths shown in many brochures ignore space lost to the stall divider, pads and wall structure.)

Empty weight of a Comfort is about 2000 lbs. But as we mentioned earlier, the Comfort is balanced so it places only about 200 lbs. on the hitch, far less than the 600 lbs. or greater tongue weight common with a domestic 2H bumper pull. We offer test drives, and if you’re like most drivers, we expect you’ll quickly observe there’s little sensation of a trailer back there.

We’ve covered Böckmann’s thoughtful safety and convenience features in some detail on our Böckmann main page. Rather than repeat all of that here, we’ll just summarize some key aspects of the Comfort.

Böckmann’s quick & quiet & adjustable Multi Safe System (MSS) chest & butt bars (with external emergency release!) are standard. MSS stall bars help you get out of the kick zone quickly. A rubber mat is bonded to the floor and the edges sealed, so floor clean-up after a trip is easy. No need to lift a mat. Just sweep or hose it out.

The white interior of the Comfort is bright and inviting. There’s a large tinted tip-out window near each horse’s head and we typically specify the roof vent/skylight. Most folks run with the self-furling rear curtain up, so the Comfort offers great natural light and ventilation all around.

Comforts have Böckmann’s well-proven inertia-actuated mechanical brakes. They apply braking force automatically in proportion to the load in the trailer and no brake controller is required in the tow vehicle. The brake actuation relies totally on the laws of physics. No electronics to fail, no brake fluid to maintain and no brake lines to rust out. Simple, effective and well-proven. Another Böckmann feature to simplify life is sealed wheel bearings. No need to do the cleaning and packing of bearings required by most manufacturers.

All Böckmann models are well equipped in standard configuration, but options are available. On the Comfort, several wall and roof color combinations are offered. The standard polymer fenders are black, but optional fiberglass fenders in various colors are offered. Other options include solid and lattice head dividers, fold-down mounting step (essentially a small platform on the ramp), exterior tie bar/saddle rest, alloy wheels, small/ large/extra-large graphics and more.

(Please note: Most of the features shown here are standard, but some trailers are shown with options. We took most of these pictures, but some images are courtesy of Böckmann North America and Böckmann Fahrzeugwerke GmbH.)
